Key Words
Network topology, communications protocols, broadband networks, network services, network security, queueing theory

Course Objectives
Due to the recent advances and integration of computer systems and communication systems, information communication networks have been studied and used all over the world. In this course, the design schemes for information communication networks, various communications protocols, network services, and the recent security issues are introduced. Attendees of this course may understand how the communication between computers are realized and various network-based services are provided for users.

Course Goals
Through this course, it is expected for students to understand basics technologies for information communication networks, such as a layered model of communication systems, functions of each layer, computer networking devices and their roles and functions, network services, network security issues, queueing theory, and so forth. The goal of this course for the students is to become able to properly explain each technology.

Course Schedule
(1) Information and communication network systems overview (3 lectures)
(2) OSI reference model (1 lecture)
(3) Lower layer protocols (3 lectures)
(4) Network services (2 lectures)
(5) Network security (2 lectures)
(6) Queueing theory basics (4 lectures)

Homework
It is required for students to make enough preparation and review before and after each lecture. For each lecture, 90 min preparation and 90 min review are required. Note that two credits are given for 90 hours of study. Lecture materials will be available on the Web.

Grading System
Students whose attendance rate is less than 70% cannot get any evaluation. Evaluation is based on reports (30%), the term examination (60%), and the lecture participation (10%). By reports, students' understanding of every lecture is evaluated. By the term examination, basic knowledge, understanding, and application ability are evaluated. The evaluation is based on 11 grades. The ratio of A+ is not greater than 5% of registered students. The ratio of A+ and A is between 5% to 20% of registered students.
