授業の目標         
In this course, students will develop an enhanced understanding of diversity and acceptance by reading non-mainstream stories with vocabulary support and paragraph writing. In this way, students will receive consistent English reading and writing skills training, and knowledge of cultures that are seldom introduced in Western textbooks. These stories will document African, African-American, Native American, and immigrant-American (including Japanese-American) people's experiences throughout American history.

到達目標         
By the end of this course, students should be able:
1. to read and comprehend 500-2500-word English texts quickly using reading strategies and use these same strategies to predict quiz questions.
2. to learn to answer questions with precision and clarity.
3. to write one strict basic English paragraph that includes a topic sentence,supporting point 1, two to three detail sentences, supporting point 2, two to three detail sentences, supporting point 3, two to three detail sentences, and a conclusion that states all three supporting points.
4. to use articles, nouns, pronouns, subject-verb agreement, and verb tenses properly.
5. to grasp non-Japanese societal concepts through reading.

Week 1: Orientation will include class requirements,reading strategies, other important information, and self-introduction.
Homework: Watch a video about the dangers of stereotyping other people.

Week 2: Write an essay related to the dangers of stereotyping other people.
Homework: Story #1 - Read, listen to, and apply reading strategies in preparation for next week's combined task (combination of multiple choice, true/false, short answer, and a paragraph),

Week 3: Complete Combined Task #1.
Homework: Story #2 - Read, listen to, and apply reading strategies in preparation for next week's combined task

Week 4: Complete Combined Task #2.
Homework: Story #3 - Read, listen to, and apply reading strategies in preparation for next week's combined task

準備学習(予習・復習)等の内容と分量         
積極的かつ主体的な準備学習(予習・復習)が求められる。準備学習への取り組み方全般については、学期はじめに担当教員から説明があるほか、各回の授業で求められる準備学習の具体的内容については、学期中随時教員から習に取り組むことも強く期待される。準備学習を十分に行わなければ、身につけるべき内容を消化できず、単位も取得できなくなる可能性があるので、真剣かつ計画的に取り組んでほしい。

成績評価の基準と方法         
すべての成績は、毎週の複合タスク。クラスポイント(毎週の複合タスク)の50%を獲得できない学生は、この授業に合格する資格がありません。

・Class activity (Combined Task part A): 50%
・Combined Task Part B (paragraph writing) & Final exam: 50%
